Sgt. Detra Massey Shepherd, HPD Retired

Sgt. Detra Massey Shepherd is a retired Houston Police Department (HPD) Sergeant who is also an actress, producer, and motivational speaker. 


Sgt. Shepherd served with the Houston Police Department, reaching the rank of Sergeant. Her service included involvement in the D.A.R.E. program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) as a highly recommended speaker for children. A 2001 Houston City Council agenda mentioned a recommendation for the extension of her "Injured on Duty" status. 


She earned a Bachelor of Organization in Leadership with a minor in Criminal Justice from Mountain State University. 


After retiring from HPD, she pursued a childhood dream of acting. She has worked as an actress and producer, known for her roles in local theatrical productions in Houston and the film Joy Comes in the Morning (2016). Her big break in theatre came with a lead role in the play "God of Chance". 


Detra Massey is an advocate for education and continues to be involved in public speaking.  Her professional life highlights a successful transition from a distinguished career in public service to an active role in the arts and community advocacy.
